short story long
I don’t want to say I have a “passion” for digital marketing. Mainly because if anyone says they have a passion for corporate work I’m going to tell them they need to get outside more and reevaluate their priorities.
No, my “passion” is for communicating, sharing knowledge, storytelling. I love connecting with other humans, and digital marketing is a way that I’ve found I can do that while also earning a living.
I fell into digital marketing as a career accidentally. Graduating college, I wanted to go into scriptwriting; writing for TV, film, documentaries, and the like. For a variety of reasons, that didn’t pan out, and when I found myself working for a company with no marketing department I convinced them to let me build one (on top of what they hired me to do, of course).
As a millennial, I’ve been teaching myself skills like coding since I was about 12, so learning the ins and outs of digital marketing was familiar and a fun escape from the day-to-day. Looking back, I didn’t achieve all that much in terms of tangible results at that company, but because of the experience I gleaned from being the de-facto marketing team, I was able to move on to an official marketing role with my next job. The rest, as they say, is history (and a lot more hard work while lucking into some amazing leadership).
I never want to stop learning, and digital marketing as an industry will never stop changing. I’ve found that my self-taught journey keeps me in that growth mindset, never getting in that rut of “this is how we do things because it’s how we’ve always done things”. I also never assume I have all the answers or that my way is the only correct way of doing something. If I’m the smartest person in the room, I want to be in a different room. But also, if I’m the only person in the room open to other ideas I don’t want to be in that room either.
